Annabel Watts' interest in the Victorian artist, Helen Allingham RWS, dates back to 1980 when she visited an exhibition of the artist's work in London. There she recognised many of the views and buildings in the paintings as being located around Witley, Surrey where she had always lived. So intrigued was Annabel by these paintings that after some research, she discovered that Allingham had painted two houses her parents once owned, her grandmother's farmhouse as well as her in-laws home. Since then, Annabel has traced and photographed over 150 buildings painted by Helen Allingham and this collection of photographs forms a collection held at the National Monument Record in Swindon. 30 years on, Annabel continues to be interested in all aspects of the artist's life including her sister, Caroline Paterson, It was Annabel who 'discovered' the collection of 55 Allingham watercolours that became known as The Marley Collection when it sold at Christie's in 1991. She assisted with Ina Taylor's biography Helen Allingham's England, and which is dedicated to her. In addition Annabel has written numerous articles on the artist, organised exhibitions, compiled a bibliography on Allingham's illustrative and published work. Annabel is also interested in the Witley artist, W. Graham Robertson as well as other Surrey artists and gives talks on The Life and Work of Helen Allingham. She frequently acts as a consultant to art dealers and auction houses. Annabel can be contacted directly by clicking here. |
